The CED Scientific Art Contest – “The Beauty of Organisms and Systems”
Our species is facing global challenges such as population aging or climate change, which can only be solved through scientific progress. However, this has to be a demand from our societies, which in many cases ignore the complexity of nature due to the lack of effective dissemination from the scientific community. One way to overcome this issue is using art. Art is a powerful tool to invite citizens to become more interested in science and technology and to allow the scientific community to share their work. Thus, the general public will be more aware of the latest advances in a research field or will understand complex concepts by contemplating artistic representations.
Are you involved in science or research activities in any discipline at any level in Denmark? Do you want to use art to share your work with the rest of the world? If so, don’t hesitate to submit your artworks!
Who can participate?
This contest mainly targets people involved in science or research activities in any discipline at any level in Denmark. Essentially, bachelor students, master students, Ph.D.’s, postdocs, researchers, professors, and professionals linked to the scientific community located in Denmark.
The audience of the contest are all citizens, in particular, the ones in the Copenhagen area where a physical exhibition will be organized showing the artworks of the finalist contestants.
How does it work?
The topic of the contest for this first edition is ‘The beauty of organisms and systems.’ Participants are free to interpret this topic for creating their artwork as long as they communicate the scientific concept represented. The aim is to introduce the public to the science behind the artwork.
2.2. Artwork format and submission
There are two categories: 1) Photography, 2) Drawing/Painting (including digital).
Participants will be able to send their preferred artworks, up to three per participant, using the following form: https://goo.gl/forms/fE3d5Qj7i0AbtQPo1
Participants must include their name, working title, and contact email. The Society of Spanish Researchers in Denmark will then give them an anonymous name and send the artworks to the evaluation panel.
The submitted file/s name must be the main title/s of the artwork/s and must be accompanied by a Microsoft Word or pdf file including the main title and two descriptions: 1) a short explanatory legend (max. 50 words), informative enough to help the audience understand the scientific content behind the artwork, and 2) a longer description (max. 150 words) explaining in more detail the artistic concept and aim of the artwork. For instance, motivations for the chosen subject, artistic intentions, etc.
File formats accepted include JPG, PNG, and TIFF. In the case of non-digital drawing/paintings, the artwork must be scanned or photographed so that it can be sent electronically.
Files must have a proper size (minimum 2756 x 3937 pixels) and resolution (minimum 150 dpi) to be printed in 70×100 cm format, so the quality of the final piece is not compromised.
Files participating in the Photography category can be edited digitally, as long as edition enhances artistic or scientific quality (or both).
The organization encourages the participants to fulfill all the requirements. Otherwise, the artwork may not be taken into consideration.
2.3. The evaluation panel and evaluation system
The evaluation panel is constituted by three referees. To ensure the contest´s independence, two of them are professionals with artistic or science background and exposure to graphical arts, which are not linked to the Society of Spanish Researchers in Denmark. The remaining referee is a member of the CED-SFD that does not belong to the management board of the association.
The artworks will be assessed by the evaluation panel based on several criteria: Originality, Quality, Appealingness of the used method, Aesthetic value, Artistic concept and description of the artwork, and Communication message. Referees reserve the right to assign penalties to those artworks that deviate too much from the proposed topic.
2.4. Artworks rights
Copyrights and ownership rights to any artwork submitted shall remain with the respective participant. However, by submitting the artwork, the participant grants the Society of Spanish Researchers in Denmark and its sponsors the right to feature, display, post, copy, print and use the image with educational or dissemination purposes. Under no circumstances, the image can be used for profit or for commercial activities.
The work must be original: Participants must be the creators of the art submitted to the competition. Their art must be their original concept and not a copy of anyone else’s copyrighted material. If the artwork infringes upon another’s copyright, the participant will be disqualified. Upon submitting the artwork to this competition, participants are solely responsible for any infringement on copyrighted materials.
2.5. Awards and finalists
Up to eight (8) artworks in total will be selected as finalists, which will be printed for public exhibition. The best artwork in each category (photography and drawing/painting) will be printed in 70×100 cm format and receive an award of 1000 DKK. The remaining finalists will also be printed in a smaller format of maximum 50×70 cm.
In the drawing/painting category, finalists will have the possibility to send the original artwork to the organization to be exhibited in the selected location(s). The organization will contact the finalists when the evaluation panel takes its decision to provide this option. If participants prefer not to send the original piece, the printed photo sent for evaluation will be exhibited.
The organization takes no responsibility for any damage that artworks can suffer during the period of the exhibition in the selected location(s).
If no artworks are selected as finalists in one category, the prize for that category will be declared null and void.

We are a community that intends to represent researchers of all disciplines working in Denmark. We have three delegacies over the country: Aalborg, Aarhus and Copenhagen. The Comunidad de Científicos Españoles en Dinamarca (CED) (Society of Spanish Scientists in Denmark), also known as Spanske Forskere i Danmark (CVR nr: 36125241) is part of a growing movement of Spanish scientists abroad including United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, USA, Japan, Australia, Asia-Pacific that represent more than 3000 researchers.
WHAT ARE OUR GOALS?
- Dissemination of the research carried out by its members
- Promote the interest of science in the society
- To promote scientific collaboration between Spain and Denmark and other European countries
- Be the contact point for improving Science and Innovations policies
- To contribute to the professional and personal settlement of newcomers
- Create a job bank
- To help those who wish to return to Spain
